Morgan school celebrates 100 years

By Sue Kiesewetter

MORGAN TOWNSHIP — Morgan Elementary School spent a little time Friday celebrating 100 years of heritage with its community.

It was a century ago that the first Morgan school was built for the children in this rural western Butler County township, now part of the Ross Local Schools. The school held its first graduation in 1902 with a class of two.

The Parent Teacher Organization on Friday evening held parties for families of current or former students. Guests included past and current teachers, principals and school board members, said Sherry Thaler, PTO president.

“We started talking about it at the end of last school year with the idea of a small birthday party and then it kept growing,” Mrs. Thaler said.

Some 430 guests were expected for the celebration. Besides displaying historic documents and pictures, plans were to bury a time capsule, lay an engraved stone and place a plaque marking the occasion.

Morgan school is thought to have been the first school in the area to offer transportation to its students and the first to prepare a course of study with specific textbooks listed, Mrs. Thaler said.
