Mason schools may add offerings
Survey asks about academics, sports

MASON Parents and students at Mason High School soon will be asked what kind of after-school programs they would like to see added.
A survey will key in on four areas: intramural sports programs, academics, fine arts and competitive sports. School officials will wait until after the survey to respond to a recent request to add a boys freshmen soccer team.
Superintendent Kevin Bright said information from the surveys would be forwarded to the district's Supplemental Review Committee, a group that decides which supplemental positions should be funded or dropped.
We may have a decision by mid-June, Mr. Bright said.
Athletic Director Rod Russell said the committee is reviewing a request to add an assistant coach position to the high school soccer program. If approved, a freshman soccer team would be added, provided there was enough interest. If not, players would be added at the junior varsity level and the added coach would assist at that level.
We want to provide the opportunity but have a good, quality program, Mr. Russell said. We're trying to catch up in a lot of areas. It's all part of this growth we've been experiencing.
The survey was put on the fast track after board members listened to a request to begin a fall freshman boys soccer program last week by Leah Askren, a Xavier University student and Mason High School graduate who coaches an eighth-grade boys team.
