HIGH SCHOOL INSIDER
Cintas Center may lure tournaments
By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Xavier University's Cintas Center could become a site for high school postseason tournaments during the 2000-2001 school year.
Members of the Southwest District Board of the Ohio High School Athletic Association toured the nearly completed facility two weeks ago and were impressed.
The philosophy of the Xavier people is to do everything possible to make it a community-oriented facility, said John Rossi, secretary/treasurer of the Southwest District Board.
They want to bring as many high school students as possible onto the campus and there's no better way to do it.
The tour was arranged at the request of the Southwest District Board before contracts are signed for next season's wrestling and girls and boys basketball tournaments.
We plan to send them a letter with the dates that we may possibly want to use the facility, Rossi said.
A good possibility is moving the district wrestling tournament to the Cintas Center in late February.
The Southwestern Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association has requested that all three of its divisions compete at the same site. Fairfield (Division I), Wilmington (II) and Xenia (III) high schools have been district tournament sites the past two years.
It's always been the policy of the board to provide the athletes with the best possible facilities, and this is a fine place, Rossi said of the Cintas Center. When people see Xavier's facility, they will fall in love with it.
Moving some sectional basketball games to the Cintas Center is also a possibility, rather than using Miami University's Millett Hall or the
University of Cincinnati's Shoemaker Center.
PREP SIGNINGS: Andy Larkin, St. Xavier's 6-foot-7, 200 pound forward/center for the Division I state championship basketball team, has committed to the University of Rochester (N.Y.).
Andy was our go-to guy on the inside, St. X coach Scott Martin said. He was a great leader throughout the season.
Larkin averaged a team-high 14 points last season.
Derek Scherer, a forward for the Amelia basketball team, has signed to play for Marietta College next season.
Triffon Callos, a left-handed pitcher for the LaSalle baseball team, has accepted a scholarship from Morehead State University.
Johnny Peppers, an outfielder for Oak Hills, has commited to play baseball for Otterbein College.
Matt Wilson of Goshen has commited to play football at Franklin College in Indiana.
