LIBERTY TWP. — As the clapping got stronger and the cheers louder, ice-cream participants Josh Zieverink and Zach “Stick” Moyer couldn't restrain themselves any longer.

Throwing down their spoons, the two sophomores plunged their faces into the gooey, 300-foot-long ice cream sundae, stretched across cafeteria tables in Lakota East High School's main hallway.

“The audience was cheering, I couldn't hold anything back. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Josh said.

“It's school spirit,” added Zach. “Can't disappoint the crowd.”

In just 17 minutes, 800-plus students who had paid $1 each had demolished much of the sundae.

The concoction included 100 gallons of brick-shaped ice cream patties set in plastic-lined gutters, 20 cans of whipped cream and 40 pounds of chocolate syrup. It was put together by members of the student govern ment as part of activities leading up to prom.

Dubbed BYOB — Bring Your Own Banana — the event was part of a weeklong effort to raise awareness about drinking and driving. also raised money for Reach Out Lakota and the United Way.

Other events included a presentation by a group that performs skits on issues facing students, a drunken-driv ing simulator and a visit by the Grim Reaper today.

“We wanted to show them they could have fun together — like today — without drinking,” Principal Ruth Barber said.

Mrs. Barber said she'd like to make the BYOB an annual event, perhaps challenging other area high schools to build a longer sundae while raising money for worthwhile organizations.
