Opponent for Lucas chosen

Boone GOP picks Kenner to run

By Patrick Crowley
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BURLINGTON — Boone County Republicans have chosen Florence dentist Charlie Kenner to run in a special November election for county commissioner.

Dr. Kenner will challenge Richwood Democrat Lance Lucas, who was appointed by Gov. Paul Patton to an open seat on the county fiscal court in March.

Dr. Kenner, who has not held political office, was picked for the race Thursday night by a recruitment committee of the Boone County Republican Party.

“We had a complete and open process,” said Boone County GOP Chairman Ed Moore. “We knew the governor would show his partisanship and appoint a Democrat, so we took our time and it paid off.”

The fiscal court seat was opened after commissioner Rob Arnold, who was elected in 1998, resigned March 31 to take a job out of town.

The November election is to fill the final two years of Mr. Arnold's term.

The election will pit the sons of two well known former Boone County courthouse politicians.

Dr. Kenner is the son of the late Ron Kenner, the former county sheriff. Mr. Lucas is the son of U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas of Richwood, who served as county judge-executive before being elected to Congress two years ago.

Dr. Kenner was selected over four other Republicans who sought the appointment. They are:

        • Terry Johnson of Union, a business owner.

        • Don Kirby, a technology consultant who is running for Union City Commission.

        • Jack Graham of Florence, who works in the insurance industry.

        • David Buck of Union, a Comair pilot.

“We were fortunate to interview five incredibly qualified candidates for this vacated seat,” said Marc Wilson, a Florence GOP strategist who headed the recruitment committee.

“Any of our candidates could have captured broad support throughout the county,” he said.
