WHAT'S IN STORES TODAY
Disk picks: It's a big week for major new CD releases.

Can Britney Spears beat 'NSync's record-breaking sales? Probably not, says Enquirer music critic Larry Nager, but because both acts are on the same label, the sure winner is Jive Records. Ms. Spears' Oops . . . I Did It Again (Jive; $18.98 CD, $11.98 cassette) hits stores this week.

Pearl Jam is back to the grunge on Binaural (Epic; $17.98 CD, $11.98 cassette, $16.98 LP). But the band's quirky eclecticism is also on display — “Soon Forget” features Eddie Vedder on ukelele.

Its last album was the live boxed set, Hampton Comes Alive. Now Phish gets back to the studio with Farmhouse (Elektra; $17.98 CD; $11.98 cassette).

It's been a good year for veteran female performers, and Carly Simon joins Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull with her new The Bedroom Tapes (Arista; $17.98 CD, $11.98 cassette).
