Middletown arrests 21 in public housing drug bust

By Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIDDLETOWN — Police arrested 21 people and were seeking a dozen more in a drug sweep of the city's public housing areas Tuesday.

Maj. Mike Bruck said the arrests followed a six-month undercover investigation in which officers purchased crack cocaine, marijuana, LSD and prescription medications.

“We were concentrating on complaints received from residents in the community,” he said.

The city has public housing projects on South Breiel Boulevard, 18th Avenue, Main Street and Sutphin Street. There also are indi vidual public housing units throughout the city.

The anti-drug effort is similar to Hamilton's annual drug sweeps in public housing areas, Maj. Bruck said.

At 7 a.m. Tuesday, 25 Middletown officers reported early for duty. They had warrants for 33 suspects facing 123 felony charges.

About half of the charges were for alleged trafficking; the other half, for alleged possession of drugs.

No one was injured during the arrests.

Assistance came from the Butler Metropolitan Housing Authority, the prosecutor's offices in Butler and Warren counties and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
