Academy has grown in past 25 years

By Ben L. Kaufman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Improved programs and rising demand have characterized the past quarter century at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Founded in 1869 as the McMicken School of Design at the University of Cincinnati, it was transferred to the Cincinnati Museum Association in 1884.

The association had opened the museum in Eden Park in 1886 and the academy moved in next door in 1887 as a department of the museum.

The academy established its own administration and began granting bachelor of fine arts degrees in 1979. In 1995, it added a master of arts in art education, its first graduate program. The academy also confers an associate of science in graphic design.

In 1998, the academy separated from the museum and became an independent nonprofit corporation. It also leased Mount Adams Elementary School for noncredit community education programs that serve more than 2,300 children and adults each year.

It has a $15 million endowment, a $4 million annual budget, a $1.85 million annual payroll, 210 undergraduates and 35 graduate students.

The academy provides an outreach program for 1,500 grade schoolers in Cincinnati, the student-run Academy Design Service for nonprofit organizations, participation in the summer Artworks program, exhibitions and artists teaching in classrooms.
