Dramas dominate Fox lineup

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Angel vs. Dark Angel? John Goodman vs. Bette Midler vs. Regis Philbin's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Fox's fall schedule of five new dramas and two new comedies will present some interesting choices for viewers.

Dark Angel, a sci-fi series from Titanic director James Cameron, will air at 9 p.m. Tuesday opposite WB's Angel, the spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Mr. Goodman, the popular dad on Roseanne (1988-97), plays a gay dad on Don't Ask at 8 p.m. Wednesday. It will compete for viewers with Bette Midler's new CBS comedy and ABC's hit Millionaire.

Not renewed by Fox were Family Guy, Get Real, Greed, World's Wildest Police Videos, World's Funniest, Ally, Ryan Caufield: Year One, Action, Harsh Realm and Manchester Prep. The fate of Jennifer Love Hewitt's Time of Your Life will be determined this summer.

Thursday nights, a dark hole on Fox for years, will be filled with specials, baseball playoffs and movies through December.

Two dramas will debut on Thursday sometime in January-March: an X-Files spin-off called the Lone Gunmen from Chris Carter, and a new series by Michael Crichton (ER, Jurassic Park) that has no script, title or cast.

        The new dramas:

        • Dark Angel (9 p.m. Tuesday): Jessica Alba stars as “a genetically-enhanced human prototype” who is pursued by her military inventors through the Pacific Northwest in the 21st century. She hooks up with a “cyber-journalist” (Michael Weatherly, Significant Others) to battle “the ruthless power-brokers of the new millennium.”

        • Boston Public (8 p.m. Monday): David E. Kelley goes to school for his next drama, about teachers at a suburban Boston high school. The cast includes Anthony Heald, Chi McBride (John Larroquette Show), Jessalyn Gilsig and Fyvush Finkel (from Mr. Kelley's Picket Fences). It will be paired with his Ally McBeal, also set in Boston.

        • The $treet (9 p.m. Wednesday): After hitting with Sex and the City for HBO, Darren Starr stays in New York for a drama about young Wall Street stock traders. Starring Tom Everett Scott, Rick Hoffman, Adam Goldberg, Melissa DeSousa, Christian Campbell and Sean Maher.

        • Fearsum (8 p.m. Friday): Blair Witch Project producer Gregg Hale concocted this drama about a Florida man (Ethan Embry) with an Internet site debunking paranormal mysteries who receives an e-mail indicating that his dead twin brother may still be alive. Viewers will be able to delve further into the show's mythology through a Web site.

        • Night Visions (9 p.m. Friday): A Twilight Zone anthology, with different stars each week, will air where Harsh Realm and Millennium have failed.

        The new comedies:

        • Don't Ask (8 p.m. Wednesday): Mr. Goodman plays a gay single father sharing a house with his divorced college buddy (Anthony LaPaglia) and their kids in a show from former Roseanne producers.

        • Schimmel (8:30 p.m. Wednesday): Comedian Robert Schimmel stars as an outspoken husband with a tolerant wife (Talia Balsam) and two teen-age daughters.
