'Average Joe' robs Clermont bank

By Jim Hannah
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The bank robber dubbed “Average Joe” because of his unassuming appearance has struck again.

Police say the serial bank robber — who they now think lives in the Tristate — hit a KeyBank branch in Clermont County at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The man is suspected in 15 to 20 robberies since February 1998 from Louisville to south of Day ton.

His previous hit was April 11 on a bank in Lexington, Ky.

“Average Joe is smart,” said FBI Special Agent Doug Warner.

“He wants to look like a customer. No one knows the bank is being robbed until he is out the door. That is why we call him Average Joe. He blends in.”

The bank robber was featured on the America's Most Wanted television show two weeks ago.

“It is frustrating when someone has done 17 bank jobs and no one has been able to apprehend him,” Agent Warner said.

“We do have good pictures of him. But we still have not gotten a solid lead.”

Agent Warner said Average Joe hits a bank about every six weeks.

He usually slides a teller a note, typed in all capital letters, demanding $3,000 to $4,000.

The FBI said it appears the man hits a bank after he has spent all the money from his previous heist.

On Friday, Average Joe walked into the bank at 4565 Eastgate Blvd., Union Township, and demanded a specific amount of money.

FBI spokesman Ed Boldt said the man didn't display a weapon.

The FBI wouldn't say how much money was taken.

The man fled in a late-model beige or brown Neon with no license plates.

Average Joe is described as a white man about 35 years old, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, with a medium build and short, dark hair.
