Covington teachers get raises

COVINGTON — Covington teachers will see a 4.2 percent raise and five days of professional development next school year.
The board of education approved those items and several others late Thursday after accepting the resignation of Superintendent James Kemp.
Measures passed by the board include:
ãThe tentative 2000-2001 budget. The budget outlines how the district will spend roughly $39 million. The budget is now a working document that will be finalized in September.
ãA salary increase of 4.2 percent for teachers.
ãA salary increase of 2.2 percent for classified employees, such as secretaries, custodians and cafeteria workers.
ãA calendar that adds five days of professional development to teachers' work year. Teachers will work 190 days next year, as opposed to 185 now. The additional five days will cost the district $313,400 but will give teachers needed technology training and time for parent-teacher conferences.
Nearly every aspect of Covington Schools is under intense public and state scrutiny since the release of a March report that criticized the way the district delivers services.
That report prompted the school board to request an academic audit, a management audit, a financial audit and a technology review from the state.
