Fairfield schools hire new athletic director

By Sue Kiesewetter

FAIRFIELD — Nick Hrnyak will leave Wilson Junior High School on July 1 to become the new athletic director for Fairfield Schools.

Mr. Hrnyak was chosen from a field of six finalists and awarded a two-year contract by the Fairfield Board of Education Thursday. He will earn $71,766.

“He was the top choice of everybody who interviewed him,” said John Pennell, Fairfield's administrative assistant for business.

For the past six years, Mr. Hrnyak has been Wilson's assistant principal. Prior to that he was athletic director at Taft High School.

He also worked and coached in the Oak Hills and Ross schools during his 28 years in education.

Mr. Hrnyak is a former football player for the University of Cincinnati.

One of the first tasks facing Mr. Hrnyak will be hiring people to fill key coaching positions, including head varsity basketball and volleyball coaches.

Mr. Hrnyak also will choose a new assistant athletic director to fill a spot vacant the past year.

Mr. Hrnyak will replace Bill Stewart, who will return to a teaching position in the business department at Fairfield High School in August.

Last September, Mr. Stewart resigned his athletic director position effective at the end of June rather than face dismissal over a disagreement with the board of education. His contract ran through 2002.
