The executive who led the launch of Cincinnati Bell's successful wireless and long-distance businesses has been named to head all of Bell's Greater Cincinnati operations.

John F. Cassidy, 45, was named president and chief operating officer of Cincinnati Bell, reporting to Rick Ellenberger, president and chief executive officer of Broadwing Inc., the local company's parent.

“Jack has demonstrated, through his unprecedented success with Cincinnati Bell Wireless and Cincinnati Bell Any Distance, the kind of big thinking and bold action that will allow us to continue to win and provide strong growth in our local markets,” Mr. Ellenberger said.

In his new role, overseeing Bell's local operations, Mr. Cassidy parallels Rick Pontin, who heads Broad- wing Communications, the company's Austin, Texas-based fiber-optic network.

Under Mr. Cassidy, Cincinnati Bell Wireless has been described as the most successful new wireless service introduction in the country, growing to more than 200,000 subscribers in the past two years, representing 10 percent of the covered population in the Cincinnati-Dayton market.

Any Distance, Bell's long-distance service introduced this year, has signed up 300,000 residential households in Greater Cincinnati, representing almost half the residential market of 638,000 customers.

Mr. Cassidy, who joined Bell four years ago, was named president of Cincinnati Bell Enterprises at the formation of Broadwing last fall, overseeing the wireless business, Cincinnati Bell Directory and Cincinnati Bell Supply. In his new post, Mr. Cassidy will also oversee Cincinnati Bell Telephone, headed by Jack Mueller.

Mr. Cassidy said he'll focus on how to make Bell's growing list of product offerings relevant to customers.

“We're proud that Cincinnati is one of the few places in the nation where consumers can receive local, long-distance, wireless, Internet and broadband services from one provider, billed together with one point of contact,” he said.

Mr. Cassidy, a native of Milford, came to Cincinnati Bell from Cantel, Canada's largest cellular provider, where he was vice president of sales. Before that, he was vice president of sales and marketing for Ericsson Communications' cellular division after holding several posts with General Electric Co.
