Ky. horse country to hold Bush fund-raiser
By Patrick Crowley
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FORT MITCHELL For the third time in just over a month, Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush will pay a campaign visit to Kentucky.
But unlike the Texas governor's previous two visits May 6 at the Kentucky Derby and last week's bus trip through western Kentucky a planned June 16 trip to Lexington will be more about picking up bucks than pressing the flesh.
Mr. Bush is to attend a fund-raiser that day at the Woodford County thoroughbred horse farm Lane's End, which is owned by Will Farish, chairman of the board of Churchill Downs.
The farm is near Versailles, about midway between Lexington and Frankfort, in the heart of Central Kentucky's thoroughbred horse country.
Mr. Farish is close to the Bush family. Mr. Bush was his guest at the Derby in Louisville last month.
Mr. Bush's Austin, Texas, campaign headquarters would not confirm the visit. A spokeswoman said the campaign does not release the dates and locations of fund-raisers and political events more than two weeks out.
But Friday two high-level Republican Party sources confirmed the event on the condition they would not be named.
It's going to be a big event, said one of the sources. A lot of people in the horse industry and in the Lexington area are excited about the Bush campaign and anxious to contribute to him and meet the next president of the United States.
While in Paducah last week, Mr. Bush did say he would be back in Kentucky June 16 but he did not elaborate.
No other details about the event were available Friday.
