Deters to coordinate Congress campaign
He predicts Bush coattails will be long for Bell
By Patrick Crowley
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FORT MITCHELL Eric Deters, a Fort Mitchell attorney and former Kenton County Republican Party chairman, will run the campaign of GOP congressional candidate Don Bell.
Mr. Bell, of Oldham County, is challenging 4th District U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas of Boone County in the November general election. He won the GOP nomination in the May 23 primary over Scott Tooley of Shelby County and Roger Thoney of Highland Heights.
The choice of Mr. Deters as a campaign chairman is surprising because he is running his own race for Kenton County attorney against Democratic incumbent Garry Edmondson. That election, however, won't be held for another two years.
Mr. Deters is experienced at running and organizing campaigns. During his tenure as a GOP county official in the 1980s and early 1990s, he was known for an aggressive style and had a reputation has a hardball campaigner.
But we're not going to attack Ken Lucas in this race, Mr. Deters said Tuesday. He's a good guy, a good family man. He's not a bad person. And he's going to have a lot more money than Don.
But with George W. Bush on the top of the Republican ticket and Al Gore on the top of the Democrats' ticket, the coattails in this district are going to be long for Don Bell, he said.
The 4th District covers 22 counties from Ashland to Oldham County and includes all of Northern Kentucky. Voters in the district elected Republicans to Congress for more than 30 years until Mr. Lucas won the seat two years ago.
I'm excited about Eric Deters on my campaign, Mr. Bell said Tuesday. Eric has been out there in the political trenches for many years; he knows the game, he knows how it's played. And we can turn this campaign into a very interesting race.
Mr. Deters said he is organizing campaigning in every county in the district and planning a fund-raiser for Mr. Bell.
We'll have some gimmicks; we'll have some fun, Mr. Deters said. And we'll defend ourselves if we have to. But we're not interested in running the typical campaign. It's going to be different, it's going to be clean and it's going to be effective.
This race is going to be about presidential politics, he said. George W. Bush can sweep Don Bell into office even if Don doesn't raise a nickel and just gets out there and works.
