3 teens held in Millvale robbery
Residents applaud news at anti-crime meeting

Millvale residents gathered to meet with police to discuss crime in their neighborhood received a pleasant surprise Tuesday night.
Capt. Gary Glazier told the crowd of 20 at the Millvale Community Center that three juveniles ages 13, 16 and 17 had been arrested and charged in the brutal May 21 robbery of the Beekman Carry Out in the 3200 block of Beekman Street.
The residents at the meeting responded with a a round of applause, Capt. Glazier said later at a press briefing at District 3 headquarters in Price Hill.
Each of the juveniles, who are in custody at the Hamilton County jail, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of felonious assault, Capt. Glazier said.
The trio is accused of attacking and robbing Randy Kim, 60, and his wife, Mija, 55, with a gun at their carryout.
Mr. Kim was beaten with a baseball bat, and his wife was shot in the arm and pistol-whipped.
The Kims were treated for their injuries at a hospital, and returned to work at the store the next morning.
The brutalness of the crime shocked me, Capt Glazier said. It's scary.
The 13-year-old, who was arrested Tuesday afternoon at Dater Junior High School, was the robber who wielded the baseball bat, police said.
The robbery was caught on the store's surveillance video tape and aired on local television.
Lt. Dan Smith said the Kims, who have declined to talk publicly about the incident, were pleased with news of the arrests.
"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you,' the couple said when informed of the arrests, Lt. Smith said.
Due to the violent nature of the crime, the investigation had been a high priority with district officers, Capt. Glazier said.
I'd like to thank the community for the information they provided, he said.
Lt. Smith said there were a number of calls to Crime Stoppers and other sources that identified the three juveniles as possible suspects in the robbery and assault.
Some property from the store was recovered during the arrests, he said.
Capt. Glazier said he got a call confirming the last of the three arrests as he drove into the parking lot at the Millvale Community center for Tuesday evening's community meeting.
Last week, about 30 Millvale residents who gathered to discuss the robbery and crime in general were angry that no police representative attended.
Capt. Glazier said he apologized, but said no District 3 officer had been notified of the earlier meeting.
