Woman's second trial begins today
Charge: Shooting sister's husband
The Cincinnati Enquirer
COVINGTON Testimony was to begin today in the retrial of Alexander Sandra Eads, who is accused of murdering her sister's husband in May 1995.
She and her sister, Kimberly Springer, originally were sentenced to 30 years in prison for their roles in the fatal shooting of Ernie Springer, 44, of Ludlow.
Ms. Springer was found guilty of helping Ms. Eads kill her husband, who she said had been abusing her and threatening to abuse their daughter. Ms. Eads, 34, was convicted of pulling the trigger.
Last year, the Kentucky Supreme Court overturned their convictions and ordered a retrial. The state's highest court said that at the first trial, the defense had not received a fair number of opportunities to remove potential jurors.
Ms. Springer, 36, will go to trial in July.
Jury selection for Ms. Eads' trial lasted most of Tuesday. That process and opening statements took place before Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe, who presided over the original trial.
Mr. Springer was shot in the head on May 21, 1995, as he was sleeping in his Hay Street home in Ludlow.
The sisters first said that Ms. Eads pulled the trigger. At trial, they changed their stories and said Ms. Springer had done the shooting.
