Board OKs deal for nonteachers

LEBANON Nonteaching staff at Lebanon City Schools will get a 13.2 percent raise during the next three years under a new contract approved by the board of education.
The school board unanimously approved the pact at a special meeting Tuesday night. The deal, with the 130-member Ohio Association of Public School employees, replaces a pact that expired at the end of August 1999.
A week ago, members of the union approved the pact by a 52-1 vote. The union includes custodians, cooks and student aides. It is not clear how bus drivers, who used to be a part of the union, will be affected after having their jobs contracted out last year.
A disagreement among the drivers, their union, and a new bargaining unit they were trying to form as employees now of Laidlaw Transit is being worked out by the State Employment Relations Board.
Along with the pay increase, union members will gain a grievance process to handle complaints with management, and binding arbitration to resolve tougher cases.
Lebanon Business Operations Director Stu Long called the pact good for the school and its employees.
Bus drivers were fighting a move to return them to the union. Many drivers like the pay and other benefits. Some enjoy working for Laidlaw and were miffed when their former union attempted to make them school employees again.
