Committee pares list for Ohio coin design

The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A committee has picked 10 design ideas from among nearly 7,300 suggestions for the look of Ohio's state quarter.

The concepts selected Tuesday feature landmarks familiar to Ohioans, including aviation and invention symbols, the Lake Erie shore, an outline of the state and the Serpent Mound.

In a program that began last year, the mint is releasing five new state quarters each year for 10 years. Ohio's coin is to be the 17th and will be released in 2002, a year before the state's bicentennial celebration.

An 11-member committee of the Ohio Bicentennial Commission selected the ideas, which will be developed into designs by artists at Ohio State, Kent State and Bowling Green State universities.

“No particular designs were chosen,” said Brian Newbacher, the commission spokesman. “They just wanted enough concepts to capture a broad spectrum of ideas.”

The top three to five designs are to be sent to the U.S. Mint by June 30. Gov. Bob Taft and the 11-member Ohio Commemorative Quarter Program Committee will select the design to be used.

The commission plans to post the designs from the university artists on its Web site for public comment from June 20 to 22.

The site is: http://www.ohio200.com or http://www.ohio200.org.
