CSO clarinetist wins prestigious Avery Fisher grant

The Cincinnati Enquirer
Anthony McGill, the newly-appointed associate principal clarinetist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, has been awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.
The 20-year-old clarinetist received the $15,000 award in a ceremony Wednesday at New York's Lincoln Center. His award is only the sixth granted to a clarinetist. The first went to former Cincinnatian Richard Stoltzman in 1977.
A Chicago native, Mr. McGill has studied the clarinet since age 9. He has performed as soloist with the Baltimore and Kalamazoo symphony orchestras, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Symphony and others. In May, he graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Donald Montanaro.
Mr. McGill will begin his CSO tenure in August at the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra Concerts in the Parks. He made his first Music Hall appearance in a May Festival performance May 20.
This summer, Mr. McGill will give recitals in Chicago with his brother, flutist Demarre McGill.
The career grants are part of the Avery Fisher Artists Program, established by Avery Fisher in 1974.
