Landfill proposal rejected
The Associated Press
State regulators have rejected a proposal for a suburban Cincinnati landfill that would have been constructed by filling in a creek ravine and diverting the water through two culverts beneath the project.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday it denied a water quality permit needed to build and operate the landfill, which would have accepted construction and demolition debris. EPA officials said the compa ny failed to show that the project would not hurt the stream and its water quality.
It was a bad idea from the get-go, said Whitewater Township Trustee Hubert Brown.
Residents of the 25-square-mile township said the landfill could have damaged the environment and would have brought more noise and traffic to the area.
The company proposed to fill 1,450 feet of the streambed of an unnamed tributary of the Great Miami River and force the water into two 4-foot-thick culverts.
