Retrial under way in murder case

By Susan Vela
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — A picture of a man lying dead on his bed provided a stark reminder Wednesday of a five-year-old murder case now being retried in Kenton Circuit Court.

Former Ludlow Police Officer David Lillich was the first to testify in the murder trial of Alexander “Sandra” Eads, whose 1996 conviction and 30-year sentence has been overturned by the Kentucky Supreme Court.

The 34-year-old Detroit woman was found guilty of shooting her brother-in-law, Ernie Springer, after he allegedly had chastised and beaten his wife, Kimberly Springer, on numerous occasions.

Ms. Springer, 36, sister of Ms. Eads, was found guilty of helping her. Her conviction and 30-year-sentence were overturned, too. She will be retried in July.

Police investigators have said Ms. Eads and Mrs. Springer walked to the banks of the Ohio River a few days before the murder so that they could test-fire a handgun from Ms. Eads' car.

They shot Ernie Springer, investigators said, after he had returned from a night of drinking.

In overturning the sisters' convictions, the supreme court said they had not received enough opportunities to remove potential jurors.

The trial is supposed to continue through this week.
