Waitress burned in restaurant mishap

By

GLENDALE — A waitress at the Grand Finale restaurant was burned Sunday in an accident.

The waitress, who was not identified, was serving a heated dessert in an outdoor dining area when the wind apparently blew the burner flame onto her clothing, setting it afire.

“She was walking over to the table. Apparently, the wind hit the burner underneath the plate,” said Glendale police Officer Mac McComas.

The waitress was burned on the chest, stomach and one arm, Officer McComas said.

Employees told him they had been serving the dessert at the restaurant on East Sharon Road in the same manner for about 20 years without incident, Officer McComas said.

The waitress was transported to University Hospital, where she was expected to be treated and released late Sunday, a hospital spokesman said.

Man dies in crash after fleeing police
STONELICK TOWNSHIP — A man fleeing police in rural Clermont County crashed his car and died early Sunday morning.

A Goshen Township officer spotted an older model, four-door car driving north on Ohio 132 on the wrong side of the road at 3:59 a.m., according to the Clermont County Sheriff's Department.

It's not clear what happened next, but shortly thereafter the driver — then headed south on 132 — lost control and went off the right side of the road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The car hit a ditch and some trees and landed on its roof.

The driver of the car, Thomas L. Hester, 44, of Owensville, was killed.

No other details of the accident were available Sunday.

Man, cat escape apartment fire
A man and his cat escaped a fire in their Mount Airy apartment about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Casey Long, 21, escaped the fire by breaking out his bedroom window, and Miss Kitty was retrieved by Lt. Greg Uhlhorn, said Cincinnati District 3 Chief Gary Scott.

Mr. Long and the cat suffered from smoke inhalation, and Mr. Long's face was cut in his escape, Chief Scott said. Mr. Long was taken to University Hospital, where he was later released, and Miss Kitty was taken to Colerain Animal Clinic.

About 15 other people in the building were evacuated, the chief said.

The fire was caused by an unattended candle in the basement apartment, he said. It did not spread to the other apartments in the two-story brick building.

The damage is estimated at $25,000, Chief Scott said.

Hocking College seeks partners
Hocking College is seeking business partners anywhere in Ohio for a distance learning project to upgrade skills of hourly paid employees.

“They have a little bit of knowledge and they're desperately needed, so they're hired but they frequently don't have a chance to improve themselves,” said Ron Luce, director of professional and organizational development at the Nelsonville school.

Companies of any size are welcome but they must be in Ohio; the new Industrial Materials Academy is financed by the state Board of Regents.

Hocking will provide online computer-based instruction and business partners will provide students, workplace classrooms and equipment. Mr. Luce said he'd welcome proposals from individual firms and clusters of companies with similar needs if that suited them.

For information, contact Mr. Luce at www.luce_@hocking.edu or (740) 753-3591, ext. 2370.L

The scholarship fund will be used to provide financial assistance to library student assistants working in the Hallie Q. Brown Memorial Library. For information, contact Jim Cleveland, (937) 376-6142.
