East-West All-Star Football Game
West boasts talented, deep offense
By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The history of the annual East-West All-Star football series favors the team with quarterbacks who can throw the ball. If this holds true, the West should dominate Saturday's game at 7:30 p.m. at Lockland's Roettger Stadium.
Coached by Edgewood's Steve Channell, the West will feature Mason's Adam Livingston, The Cincinnati Enquirer's first-team All City quarterback, along with Finneytown's Jason Gardner.
Add running backs Ryan King from Hamilton (1,148 rushing yards last season), Waynesville's Joe Bradley (1,530 yards), David Dupee from Wyoming (1,654) and Edgewood's Danny Beiser (856) and the West has a solid offensive team.
It's hard in two weeks to put together a cohesive offense, Channell said. Although the defense is limited (no blitzing and only three different sets allowed), the scores are usually low because of this.
The West's major strength will be an overall size advantage, especially on the lines that average nearly 260 pounds.
On defense, look for Mike Holzinger from Oak Hills (255 pounds), Andre Frazier from Hughes (210), Taft's Robert Richardson (260), Kevin Johnson from Lakota West (260) and Northwest's Dante Walker (295) to dominate in the trenches.
I've been most impressed with the Frazier kid on defense, Channell said. His father (Guy Frazier) played for the Bengals and Andre plans to walk on at UC this year. Don't be surprised if he makes the team.
The linebacker positions are also strong behind Edgewood's Danny Beiser, Charles Newton from Western Hills, Ray Meeker from North College Hill and Lockland's Mike McKinney.
Although Channell is optimistic about the outcome, he's also disappointed.
Some of the kids never reported and others haven't shown up for all of the practices, Channell said. We've told the kids that the ones who attend practices will be the ones who play the most.
