Fete celebrates 'Middie pride'

By Sue Kiesewetter

MIDDLETOWN — This year's All-American Weekend will be more than just a three-day festival that raises funds for the Middletown High School Athletic Boosters.

It will celebrate the return of “Middie pride” as the district moves from a combined district with Monroe to a Middletown city school system.

Participants will be asked to “Renew the Spirit” — the festival's theme — beginning with a 4:30 p.m. Sunday procession down Middletown High School's driveway, led by the alumni band playing the Middie fight song. The procession will be followed by a 5 p.m. unveiling of a new logo and motto chosen from submissions entered in contests at Middletown schools.

“Since we're going to be a new district, we wanted to showcase our history and pride,” said Wayne Driscoll, Middletown superintendent. “We want to invigorate everybody and start on a positive note. This is an opportunity for the whole community to showcase all this community is proud of.”

Purple will be the color of the day on Independence Day when Middies donning spirit wear or school colors may register all day for prizes. They will be asked to gather at the soccer field by 5:30 p.m., when they will form the word “Pride.” At least 200 people are needed, said Karen Jackson, the district's school and community relations specialist.

The purple and white colors have been adopted at both middle schools as well as at Wilson and Roosevelt elementary schools.

Fireworks will end the festival at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
