Jail staff to receive raises of 4 percent
Campbell County fights turnover
By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEWPORT Campbell County Fiscal Court Friday approved 4 percent pay increases for the county's Detention Center employees, which commissioners hope will stem high turnover there.
Commissioner Dave Otto said the county was losing too many good jail employees to neighboring facilities because of the pay difference.
We can't see these people leaving and not do something, he said. We have to bite the bullet and provide some more money to bring our employees closer to the pay in other counties. You can't retain employees if you don't start out paying them enough.
Judge-executive Steve Pendery said that in some instances the salary increases resulted in jail workers moving up in classification, which meant additional salary advances.
We don't have hazardous duty retirement for our detention workers, like Kenton and Campbell county jails or like the police department, Mr. Pendery said. We needed to do something for our people.
Commissioners also approved a 4 percent salary increase for the county's police officers.
Two members were appointed Friday to the new, smaller Campbell County Planning and Zoning Commission: Robert Kues of Southgate and Don Girton of Alexandria.
The Fiscal Court previously announced that the Planning and Zoning Commission would be streamlined slightly, reducing the number of commissioners from 11 to nine. The county appoints five members and the cities of Southgate, Melbourne, Silver Grove and Crestview appoint one member each.
