Falmouth man hurt by fireworks

By Ray Schaefer

FALMOUTH — A local man was burned Monday when his shirt caught fire and set off some bottle rockets he was carrying in his pants pocket.

J.R. Stephens, 20, was taken by ambulance to University Hospital in Cincinnati with first-, second- and third- degree burns.

He is in serious but stable condition with second- and third-degree burns over 17 percent of his body, mainly in the arms and lower extremities.

Falmouth Police Officer Jeff Linkugel said Mr. Stephens was carrying 60-70 bottle rockets in the front left pocket of his blue denim shorts. He was at the Beech Street home of his sister, Lara Stephens, 21, when the accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m.

“I believe he lit one (bottle rocket) and caught his shirt on fire, and that lit the others,” Officer Linkugel said.

Falmouth police and the Pendleton County Emergency Medical Service responded after an unknown person came to EMS headquarters to report it.

Officer Linkugel said a transport helicopter was not called because of stormy weather between Falmouth and Cincinnati.
