'Taste of Boone County' continues
Festival adds bingo, crafts

FLORENCE Visitors to the fourth annual Taste of Boone County at Turfway Park can not only get their fill of food and custom cars, they may win a little money at the new bingo game.
The festival, in the Turfway parking lot off Houston Road, opened Monday afternoon with 10 food booths and a slim crowd that grew through the evening. The event continues from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. today, including a fireworks show at 10 p.m.
The Taste has grown a little each year, but this year we limited the number of restaurants taking part, said event organizer Jesse Shipp, a Boone County businessman. The restaurants need to make money to be a success; and we felt if there were too many, some would suffer.
Mr. Shipp said he, his wife, Melody, and event co-founder Kim Patton decided to put the limit at 12. We wound up with 10, Mrs. Shipp said. There were others, but they would have copied restaurants already selected.
In a large tent near the racetrack's paddock area, visitors played bingo Friday for the first time in Taste of Boone County history. The bingo games will be held again today from 6-10 p.m.
We wanted to have a few more attractions, so we're trying the bingo and some craft booths, Mr. Shipp said. We'll see how it goes this year and then make a decision on whether to do it again.
Among the foods awaiting visitors to the Taste this year are the Johnson family's popular country ham; oriental fare from Florence's Cathay Kitchen; Eddie's Southern Style Bar-B-Que; and a pair of newcomers, the German Cuisine Butcher Shop from Elsmere and Pete's Catering.
Today the parking lot adjacent to the food booths will be filled with street rods and custom hot rods from around Greater Cincinnati, and two bands will provide music through the day and evening.
