Demolition derbies a fair hit
Crowds flock to watch crashes at annual Kenton County event

INDEPENDENCE Some county fairs are known for their horse shows or livestock auctions. Others are known for their tractor pulls.
But at the Kenton County Fair and Horse Show, it's the smoke and noise otherwise known as the Dynamite Demolition Derby that packs them in, said Fair Board president William Durr.
About 30,000 people are expected during the Kenton County Fair's seven-night run, Mr. Durr said. Many of those will turn out for two nights of demolition derbies.
So many people who go to these new racecourses don't think it's a good race if you don't have a wreck, Mr. Durr said. When you go to the demolition derby, everyone wrecks.
For the 39th annual Kenton County Fair and Horse Show, there will be two chances to take in a demolition derby during the fair's July 17-22 run.
The first one, on July 17, will feature qualifying heats and the feature event of the Screaming Mini Cars. The following night, full-sized se dans will take the track for their own demolition derby.
The fair program notes that crashing begins promptly at 8 each night. Fans are advised to show up early to secure prime hillside viewing spots.
