Fairfield wants grads at home

By Sue Kiesewetter

FAIRFIELD — Graduation ceremonies for Fairfield Senior High School's Class of 2001 might move from Miami University's Millett Hall to the high school's arena.

Moving the location would give school administrators more freedom in selecting the date of graduation. Guests would be more comfortable because the arena is air conditioned, and Millett Hall is not. The $2,500 rental fee would be eliminated, and educators would have more control over guests, Principal Monica Mitter said.

Keeping graduation in town also would be more convenient for families, who could avoid the long drive to Oxford, supporters of the plan said.

“It would give us more flexibility in scheduling,” Mrs. Mitter said. “Our hands don't have to be tied.”

Before a final decision is made on Mrs. Mitter's proposal, a survey of students, staff and parents should be done, board member Anne Crone said. Graduation has been held at Millett Hall for more than 10 years because Fairfield didn't have enough space, Mrs. Crone said. With the 1997 opening of the new high school, the district now has the proper facilities for large crowds, she said.
