GE union OKs deal

By Reid Forgrave
The Cincinnati Enquirer

One of two local unions representing GE Aircraft Engines plant workers in Evendale voted Sunday to accept a three-year contract offering an average pay increase of 14 percent.

Local 912 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), which represents 600 plant employees, voted by an “overwhelming” margin to accept the contract, said Rick Kennedy, GE manager of media relations.

Vote totals were not available Sunday. Union officials could not be reached for comment.

United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 647, which represents 1,300 GE employees at Evendale, will vote on the contract this week.

Local union chapters in other parts of the country have approved the contract proposal by margins as great as 80 percent in favor, Mr. Kennedy said. He expects the UAW also will approve. Coordinated national bargaining between GE and a coalition of 14 unions, including the Evendale locals, on economic issues produced a contract proposal.

General Electric has 340,000 workers making products that vary from light bulbs to jet engines.
