Flesch misses first win
By Jack Murray
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Northern Kentuckian Steve Flesch, 33, rode the bogey train Sunday at the Western Open and right out of an opportunity for his first PGA Tour victory.
Flesch, the third-round co-leader, shot a final-round, 3-over-par 75 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club near Chicago, with seven bogeys, an eagle and two birdies.
He finished tied for ninth at 10-under 278, bogeying 10 of his final 25 holes.
I think I press too hard, Flesch said. I've got to work on my patience. All I had to do was shoot 1-under, and I'm in the playoff. Patience is something you've got to learn.
Still, it was his ninth top-10 finish this season (second best on tour behind Tiger Woods' 11) and the $72,000 he earned pushed him over the $1 million mark in winnings for 2000.
But the 1998 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year was hardly pleased he couldn't win.
I have a lot easier time being hard on myself than I do patting myself on the back, Flesch said. I think that's one reason why I do play well. I'm never satisfied with everything.
