Win would make year even better

Lucas defends title on his home course

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer Contributor

Lance Lucas has enjoyed a fun year.

The 38-year-old Florence attorney defends his Northern Kentucky Men's Amateur golf title beginning today at the Triple Crown Country Club — his home course. It's the latest highlight in a year that includes being appointed to a spot on the Boone Fiscal Court in April.

“It's been pretty exciting; it's been busy,” said Lucas, the son of Kentucky Congressman Ken Lucas. “I've tried to maintain a certain proficiency on the golf course. It's probably suffered a little bit.”

But no more than Lucas did last year. He rolled to the title wearing a brace on his right knee to protect a torn knee ligament he has since had repaired.

Lucas' spot in the Championship Flight is guaranteed thanks to winning the title last year, and he hopes familiarity with Triple Crown's course (he won the club championship in 1993 and 1997) will help him this week.

“There's no bailout areas,” Lucas said. “Every hole requires you to be straight down the fairway. There are a lot of out-of-bounds and hazards.”

Triple Crown is Rob Clarke's home course, too, and like Lucas a year ago, Clarke is looking for his first title. He finished fourth in the Northern Kentucky Amateur last year, won this year's club championship and made it to the final eight of the Cincinnati Met tournament.

Clarke said wisdom comes with maturity. He said he doesn't blow up if he makes a bogey anymore.

“I'm 44, I'm not going to hit it any better,” Clarke said. “It's not getting upset. When you're 24, you hit a couple of bogeys, you press. When you're 44, you understand the game better.”

If playing on a home course helps, Chris Dayton may have an advantage, too. He tied for second in this year's Triple Crown club tournament and won it last year.
