Man charged after running over son
MORTONS GAP, Ky. A man is charged with driving under the influence after his young son was struck and killed Saturday as the man backed out of his driveway, Kentucky State Police said Sunday.
Clay Sharber, 2, was airlifted to The Medical Center in Bowling Green, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.
The father, Donald Sharber, 35, was charged with driving under the influence as he drove to Bowling Green to check on the condition of his son, said state police spokesman Bryan Pitney.
Mr. Sharber, of Mortons Gap, was being confined at the Hopkins County Detention Center Sunday, Mr. Pitney said.
Mr. Sharber told police he was backing out of a driveway when the boy attempted to climb into the back of the truck, a police statement said.
The boy was run over at about 7:20 p.m. EDT Saturday, the statement said.
Mr. Sharber faced no additional charges Sunday but the death remains under investigation, Mr. Pitney said.
Hopkinsville moped driver killed
HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. A man died after the moped he was driving left the roadway and crashed into a ditch, Kentucky State Police said Sunday.
Donald R. Overby, 57, of Hopkinsville, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
The crash happened Saturday at about 5:20 EDT, state police said.
Mr. Overby was not wearing a helmet, state police said.
Hit-and-run driver kills one, hurts one
LOUISVILLE One man was killed and another was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver, Jefferson County Police said.
Phillip Price, 39, and Robert E. Simpson, 19, both of Louisville, were struck as they walked across Preston Highway at about 11:15 p.m. EDT Saturday, said Jefferson County Police spokesman Robert Biven.
Witnesses told police the men were struck by a dark-colored, late 1970s or early 1980s Ford F-150 pickup, which then sped away. Two witnesses reportedly followed the truck for a short time.
Mr. Biven said authorities think the truck sustained some front-end damage.
Mr. Price died at the scene, Mr. Biven said. Mr. Simpson was taken to University Hospital in Louisville, where he was listed in stable condition on Sunday night.
Secretary charged with embezzlement
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. A secretary at a Hardin County elementary school is charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the school.
Lorinda Drake, 40, a secretary at West Point Elementary School, is charged with four counts of felony theft of more than $300. Ms. Drake surrendered to state police Friday. She was indicted by a Hardin County grand jury, police said.
The thefts took place between July 1996 and November 1999, police said.
State Police Drug Enforcement/Special-Investigations Unit in Bowling Green investigated the theft allegations.
A civil suit filed in June against Ms. Drake by the Ohio Farmers Insurance Co. said that while she served as treasurer of the West Point Independent Board of Education she mishandled more than $91,000 and that she wrote checks to herself, a bank and to Allen Layman.
Mr. Layman, of West Point, was also named in the suit.
Ms. Drake could not be reached for comment.
Brother, girlfriend charged with murder
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. The brother and girlfriend of a Campbellsville man have been arrested and charged with his murder, police said.
Danny Ray Tungate, 24, died of head injuries Sunday morning at Taylor County Hospital, said Taylor County Sheriff's Det. Dan Durham. He was brought to the hospital by family members after being kicked and beaten about 6 a.m. at the home of his girlfriend, said Det. Durham.
Todd Carter, 19, and Carolyn Gail Marple, 31, were arrested Sunday morning. Mr. Carter was charged with murder and Ms. Marple was charged with facilitation to commit murder, Det. Durham said.
Both were being confined in the Marion County Detention Center.
Det. Durham said police were still investigating a motive.
11-year-old drowns at picnic in park
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. A Tennessee boy attending a church picnic at the Beech Bend amusement park drowned Saturday, Kentucky State Police said.
Steven Gatlin, 11, of Nashville, Tenn., was pronounced dead at 6:09 EDT at the emergency room of The Medical Center in Bowling Green by Warren County Deputy Coroner Chris Smith.
The boy was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool. Lifeguards attempted to resuscitate the boy, state police said.
Man charged with murder, possession
GUTHRIE, Ky. Wayne Williams, 42, is charged with murder after a shooting at his home Saturday night, Kentucky State Police said.
Darrell Garrett, 30, of Clarksville, Tenn., was pronounced dead at the Logan County Memorial Hospital at about 9:30 p.m. EDT, state police said.
Mr. Williams is also charged with possession of marijuana less than eight ounces. He was being held in the Christian County Jail Sunday. Bond has not been set.
