Former OSU star Schlichter indicted

COLUMBUS — A Franklin County grand jury indicted former Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Art Schlichter Thursday on charges that he stole a credit card from a suburban Columbus home.

Mr. Schlichter faces three felony counts of misuse of a credit card and one felony count of grand theft.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said Mr. Schlichter stole the card from a home in Grove City and used it while he was on the run from authorities in May.

If convicted, Mr. Schlichter could receive up to 41/2 years in prison.

The former football star is in an Indianapolis jail on a parole violation and faces money laundering charges there in a scheme to sell tickets to sporting events.

Mr. Schlichter had been released from an Indiana prison in September after serving less than half of a four-year sentence on charges of theft, forgery and fraud in the theft of $800,000 to support gambling.

Teen drowns in pool at residence
SPRINGFIELD TWP. — A 17-year-old North College Hill youth drowned in a pool at a private residence in the Pleasant Run Farms subdivision early Thursday morning.

David L. Williams, 17, was one of about six youths — ranging in age from 14 to 19 — attending a party at a home on Hartwood Drive when he and another youth entered the pool about 2 a.m., Springfield Township police said.

“Apparently, the victim didn't know how to swim,” said Springfield Police Capt. David Schaefer. “He slipped and went underwater where it goes into the deep end. He didn't come up.”

There was evidence of alcohol and marijuana being consumed, although it has not been determined whether the victim had been drinking or smoking, police said.

The people who live in the home had just left on vacation, and the residence was left in the care of a daughter.

Mr. Williams was taken to Mercy Hospital Fairfield, where he was pronounced dead.

Church conference to draw thousands
For the next week, Cincinnati residents will see members of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World church preaching the word and reaching out to the community.

They will hand out free snacks downtown and give away clothes at the Drop-Inn Center. The members plan evangelism trips to the county jail, juvenile center and Christ Hospital.

The denomination's annual weeklong conference starts Saturday in Cincinnati. Between 5,000 and 10,000 members from around the world are expected to attend. Locally, there are four churches with about 2,000 members.

Woman ordered back to prison
AKRON — An Akron woman convicted in her son's death more than 10 years ago will return to prison for skipping town and violating her probation.

Loretta Wright, 41, was sentenced in October 1987 to six to 25 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and endangering children.

She was convicted of failing to seek medical treatment for her 7-year-old son after he was fatally beaten by her boyfriend.

After serving nearly one year in prison, Ms. Wright was released and placed on probation for three years.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge John Adams ordered Ms. Wright to serve the remainder of her original sentence.

Flaming jar found on mayor's lawn
TOLEDO — Police were trying to figure out who put a burning pickle jar on the mayor's front lawn.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's wife woke up early Wednesday and spotted the flaming jar in front of the house. They put the fire out with water.

The pickle jar was filled with a flammable liquid. Mr. Finkbeiner said he had no idea who did it.

Mr. Finkbeiner has been the focus of attention in Toledo this week after a restaurant owner accused the mayor of assaulting him.

River searched for missing fisherman
ROSS TOWNSHIP — Butler County authorities were searching the Great Miami River near U.S. 27 Thursday night for a missing fisherman.

According to police reports, two men waded into the river to fish on the Butler County side of the river, then one left for a while. When that fisherman returned about 9:30 p.m., his companion was nowhere to be found.

Both Ross Township and Colerain Township fire officials were on the scene searching the river Thursday night.

The location where the search was taking place is near the Butler County/Hamilton County border.

Syringe in attack contained water
COLUMBUS — A syringe that authorities said was used to jab a woman at a university library contained water, according to early test results.

Authorities had not determined a possible motive in the incident at Ohio State University's main library.

Dwight D. Pannell, 35, of Columbus, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of assault and possessing criminal tools. Campus police say Weidong Zhu, 33, was seated at a table Sunday when she felt liquid on her foot and then sharp pain. She said she saw a man under the table.
