Bostic fails to advance in Olympic track trials

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Forest Park native Calvin Bostic, competing Thursday night in his first Olympic Trials in Sacrament, Calif., failed to advance in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles event.

Bostic, a 29-year-old Air Force cadet, finished fifth in his six-man heat in preliminaries. He kept near the leaders but clipped the ninth of 10 hurdles.

His time, 52.28 seconds, was fourth slowest of 28 runners. The top two in each of the six heats qualified for tonight's semifinals, along with the next six best times overall.

Bostic had the misfortune of sharing the same heat as Derrick Adkins, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist, and Angelo Taylor, the 1999 U.S. champion. Adkins won the heat in 49.56 seconds.

Bostic, a two-time high school All-American at Forest Park and two-time Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Year at Toledo, qualified last month for the Trials after injuries kept him from reaching this meet in 1992 and '96.
