Postcard from the British Open
By Paul Daugherty
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ST.ANDREWS, Scotland I decided I'm quitting the paper and moving here. I'm going to become a resident of this town. Either that, or I'll enroll at St. Andrews University. I'll be the world's oldest freshman.
It's the golf. If you live here or study here, it's almost free. Actually, the going rate is 90 pounds a year, or about $139 at the current exchange rate. For that, you can play any of the six local town courses, as much as you want. That would include the Old Course, site of the British Open.
A university student working a concession stand told me he plays the Old Course once every couple weeks. He enters a lottery every day and wins enough that he has played 11 times already this year.
Imagine playing Pebble Beach for a year, whenever you could get a tee time, for $139. (It costs $325 now, for one lousy round.) Imagine playing Sharon Woods or Hickory Woods or any woods for $139.
Some of us believe these Scots have life fairly well figured.
