Ways to stay active and healthy
Challenging careers: Golf? That's so old-fashioned. Work hard, play hard is the maxim for executives at Internet-based companies who opt for the same challenge, adventure and speed in recreation as they find in business. Many find golf, the traditional businessman's sport, too stodgy a game, the Wall Street Journal reports. They prefer more daring and strenuous activities, such as white-water rafting, mountain climbing and parachuting. Especially now, as financial worries mount, they seek extreme stress-relievers.
EXERCISE TIPS
Outdoor gym: Swimming laps is the most convenient route for using the pool as a gym. It's an effective workout for burning calories and cardiovascular conditioning.
If you prefer the challenge and motivation of a group setting, sign up for outdoor water workout classes, which have become much more progressive in recent years.
IN-SITES
Running: Runner's World magazine has a comprehensive Web site (www.runnersworld.com) with race results, training programs and an injury section that addresses the five most common running injuries (the heel, though, is not among them), a runner's guide to home remedies, how to stay fit and positive when injured, a link to a more comprehensive sports-injury site and a forum for runners to share their experiences with injuries and rehab.
NUTRITION
Change behavior: Most people know one of the best ways to change eating habits is to change eating behaviors. What they don't know is how to do that without giving up some favorite foods.
Try these tips to help keep you on the right track toward a healthy diet:
Choose whole-grain bread, cereal, pasta and rice, dry peas, beans and baked goods made with unsaturated oil or margarine. When selecting hot or cold cereals, look for varieties with two grams of fiber or more and three grams of fat or less per serving.
Prepare prepackaged rice and noodle dishes with skim or low-fat milk. Reduce or omit the butter or oil called for in the directions.
STRESS BUSTERS
Laugh a little: Laughter is one of the best natural medicines available, and it's free. August's Mademoiselle boosts five reasons to laugh all the way to happiness.
Giggling looks good.
A massive giggle session can boost your immune system and increase your life span.
With laughter, your body tenses and then releases, easing tension quickly.
Smiling sends a positive signal to those around you.
Vigorous giggling gives you the same physiological responses as vigorous exercise.
