Healthy Eating
Making time to exercise all about choosing options
Question: I know I need to make changes in my lifestyle to lose and maintain my weight, but I feel guilty when I cut back on work time or family time. How can I deal with this?
Answer: Adult decision-making revolves around choices and assessing their consequences. When choosing a behavior, you decide which consequences you are willing to accept without blame or excuse.
For example, if you say work hours leave no time to exercise, you must problem-solve and then assess which solution will get the best results. You could choose to do nothing different at work and control your weight by eating less; you could slowly cut back on overtime and use this time for exercise until you are exercising four hours per week. Or you could find an exercise option in the morning before work.
When you make a choice by reviewing each option and it's consequences, you are more likely to accept decisions without self blame or excuses. Bear in mind that courage and commitment come into play when you take on the discomfort of the consequences associated with your choices.
