Tower project revived

Will be next to peace bell

        NEWPORT — The Millennium Monument Tower, just a dream and some drawings since it was proposed three years ago, will be built next to the World Peace Bell, according to sources close to businessman Wayne Carlisle.

        The Millennium Monument Co. has called a media conference for 11 a.m. Monday at the Peace Bell museum building. Details of the tower construction including cost, financing and time of construction will be disclosed.

        The agenda for the Newport City Commission meeting Monday night calls for the first reading of an order “supporting the Millennium Monument project to be located in the 400 block of Monmouth and York streets.”

        Early estimates placed the tower project at $100 million. Construction of the tourist attraction, with shops and restaurants, was delayed by the inability of the Millennium Monument Co. to obtain financing.

        Robert Brewster, executive director of Brighton Center and a member of the Millennium Monument Co. board, said Friday he could not discuss any details of the project, but confirmed that “there will be all kinds of folks at the press conference Monday who will have all the answers.”

        Attempts to reach Mr. Carlisle for comment were unsuccessful Friday.

        Businessman David Hosea originated the idea in 1997, and was joined in the venture by friend and Northern Kentucky mover-and-shaker Mr. Carlisle. Last year, Mr. Carlisle, president of Carlisle Construction of Wilder, bought out Mr. Hosea's portion of the Millennium Monument Co.

        The early plans called for a structure 1,234 feet high, with restaurants and shops at several levels as well as 200 bells, including the 66,000-pound World Peace Bell.

        Federal Aviation Administration concerns lowered the proposed tower to under 1,000 feet.

        The Millennium Monument tower project received tentative approval from the state in 1998 for $32 million in tax credits.

        Mr. Carlisle acquired the entire block bounded by Monmouth, York, 4th and 5th streets, as well as some surrounding properties.
