Tennis Master Qualifier

Dent closer to main draw

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

California native Taylor Dent registered an upset in Saturday's Tennis Masters Series Cincinnati qualifying as he beat Davide Sanguinetti, the No.89 player in the world, 6-3, 7-5.

“I've been playing in some satellite tournaments and gradually working my way up,” said Dent, whose father, Phil, was an Australian Open finalist in 1974 and French Open semifinalist in 1977. Taylor Dent lost to Andre Agassi at this year's Wimbledon.

Dent plays Razvan Sabau, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 upset winner over Jan Kroslak, the No.11 seed and No.138 ranked player in the world.

Other Americans winning Saturday were Jeff Salzenstein, Bob Bryan, Cecil Mamiit and Brandon Hawk. Alex O'Brien, Michael Joyce and NCAA champion Alex Kim (Stanford) were eliminated.

There were five upsets during Saturday's 16 qualifier matches, the biggest by Russia's Neville Godwin (No.181 in the world), who defeated No.4 seed George Bastl, 7-6, 7-5. Eight qualifier matches beginning at 10a.m. today determine those moving into the main draw Monday.
