EMR/Meiners wins Metro Softball title

Other titles decided today

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Watanabe/Perkins was the team to beat in the Fry Fastening ASA Metro Softball tournament. So for the second time in two nights, EMR/Meiners Cafe did exactly that.

EMR/Meiners held off the No.1 seed 27-24 late Sunday night in the championship game of the Majors division at Rumpke Park. On Saturday, a 33-29 loss to EMR/Meiners had sent Watanabe to the losers bracket.

Watanabe, the two-time defending champion, came out of that bracket and beat EMR 30-13 earlier Sunday.

The victory was sweet for Joe Penwell, who led EMR with four hits and six RBI. Penwell played for Watanabe the past two years before switching to EMR.

“It was just too much traveling,” Penwell said.

The Metro championship was Penwell's fourth. Besides the two playing for Watanabe, he was also a member of Backstop/Easton, the 1995 Majors champion.

EMR pitcher Brian Price came up with the fielding gem of the tournament in the seventh inning, fielding a hard smash off the bat of Brian May with no outs and turning it into a double play.

“That was the killer,” EMR/Meiner coach Aaron Smith said. “I knew we had it at that point.

Rain delays helped push back championship games in four divisions of the Metro.

Losers bracket action begins at 7 p.m. today followed at 8:15 p.m. by the championship games in divisions A, B, C National, C American and D.

“We're happy to showcase the other divisions on a separate night,” ASA Cincinnati Commissioner Danney Saylor said. “The majority of players in Cincinnati are Class C and D, and this will be their night.”

Because of a record 160 teams, Class C was divided into two divisions, American and National.

“We will crown a champion in both C divisions (tonight),” Saylor said. “We'll then bring the two winners back to play on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. to determine the champion.”
