Agassi rested, set to return

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MASON — Andre Agassi, who retired during his second-round match against Fernando Vicente on Wednesday, intends to play next week in the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, D.C., where he is a five-time champion, including the past two years.

Agassi, who will be the top seed there as he was in Cincinnati, has not practiced since the Vicente match because of a recurring back problem.

“He has been resting,” Agassi's business manager, Perry Rogers, said Friday. “He's definitely going to try to play (in Washington).”

HOT STREAK: Australians Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge have advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw. They defeated Martin Damm and Dominik Hrbaty on Friday for their 24th consecutive victory and will play Jiri Novak and David Rikl today.

NOTABLE NUMBER: Todd Martin, who lost to Gustavo Kuerten Friday, was the last of 12 Americans entered in the field of 64. The final tally for the U.S. players: 8-12 with seven first-round exits (qualifier Bob Bryan, wild card Mardy Fish, wild card Vince Spadea, wild card Andy Roddick, qualifier Cecil Mamiit, and Olympians Michael Chang and Jeff Tarango).
