Shooting under investigation
By Jane Prendergast and Marie McCain
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati homicide investigators are trying to figure out who killed a University of Cincinnati student whose body was discovered Monday near railroad tracks in Winton Place.
David Peet, 19, of Springfield Township, was last seen leaving Vertigo a nightclub at 1 W. Corry St., in Corryville at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.
Police said he intended to stop at a Taco Bell restaurant at Winton and Galbraith roads, in Finneytown. But he never made it.
His body was found shortly before noon Monday near the dead end of Salway Street off Spring Grove Avenue in Winton Place.
A truck driver who had been making a stop at ABC Supply Co. near the area spotted Mr. Peet's body. The driver stopped at a corner bar, the Winton Tavern, and told an employee to call police.
Mr. Peet had been shot in the head, officials said.
Police are searching for Mr. Peet's car, a 1989 metallic blue Honda Civic CRX. The vehicle has an aluminum-colored spoiler on the rear deck lid.
The license plate is Ohio CES-1277.
He was an artist and a really nice kid, said Joyce DeVoge, of Wyoming. Her son, Justin, graduated with Mr. Peet from St. Xavier High School in 1999.
He was always happy and was a source of happiness for me, added Justin. He was always upbeat, and he loved life. He wouldn't let anything get him down. This shouldn't have happened to him. Dave was such a good kid.
Mr. Peet was in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, majoring in urban planning. Cars were a hobby for him, Mr. DeVoge said, adding that he had recently bought the souped up Honda.
Cincinnati police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 352-3040 or the Homicide Unit at 352-3542.
