Commissioners: Covington pool will be filled in
By Michael D. Clark and Cindy Schroeder
The Cincinnati Enquirer
COVINGTON City officials here expressed sorrow Tuesday over the drowning of a boy in an abandoned municipal pool and ordered it filled in, but the boy's mother said the sympathy and action are too little, too late.
Covington commissioners unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday evening formally noting their sympathy toward the family and friends of 6-year-old Dylan Roberts, who drowned last week in the closed Rosedale pool.
But commissioners were then publicly advised by Covington City Solicitor Joseph Condit not to comment further because of a pending investigation into the boy's death and the possibility of legal action against the city by Dylan's parents.
Mr. Condit said the Rosedale Pool, which was closed in June 1997 due to flood damage, would be filled in with dirt immediately.
So there isn't even a chance of a tragic accident like this happening again, he said.
But Dylan's mother, Carla Roberts, said the expressions of condolences struck her as insincere.
Moreover, filling in the pool should have been an option exercised shortly after the pool closed, said Ms. Roberts, not after her son drowned.
It's a great idea, but they should have done it in 1997, she said.
