Gore's daughter to visit

By Patrick Crowley
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEWPORT — Louisville got Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore over the weekend.

Northern Kentucky gets his daughter today. Karenna Gore Schiff is scheduled to appear early this afternoon at the Millennium Monument Center — home of the World Peace Bell — to campaign for her father.

Mr. Gore, under pressure from Kentucky Democratic leaders to make more appearances in the state, campaigned Monday in Louisville.

Ms. Schiff, a Columbia University law graduate and a new mom, will spend today in Kentucky, campaigning in Newport before heading to the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington for a late-afternoon event.

The public is invited to her Newport visit. Those interested in attending should be at the monument center — on the block bounded by Fourth, Fifth, York and Monmouth streets — by noon. Ms. Schiff is scheduled to speak at 12:45 p.m.

Ms. Schiff, 27, has two roles in the campaign, said Jonathan Beeton, the spokesman for Mr. Gore's Kentucky campaign.

“One is to show the personal side of Al Gore that she obviously knows ... from growing up as his daughter,” Mr. Beeton said.

She is also campaigning to help capture the vote of young people, particularly young women and mothers.

“She herself admits that she did not have much interest in politics” until she became a mother, Mr. Beeton said.

The Republicans also have a young family member of their candidate, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, stumping for the youth vote.

George P. Bush, 24, Mr. Bush's nephew and the son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, has campaigned for his uncle and also made a speech at the GOP convention in Philadelphia.
