Tristate A.M. Report
Man says he didn't kill 7-year-old girl
MARION, Ohio A man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he kidnapped, raped and killed his friend's 7-year-old daughter.
Barry Satta, 38, of Marion, was arraigned in Marion County Common Pleas Court on two counts of aggravated murder and one count each of burglary, kidnapping and rape.
He is accused in the death of Bobbie Jo Barry, who disappeared Aug. 27 from her father's home in Marion, about 40 miles north of Columbus. Her body was found the next day.
The second murder charge was filed because Bobbie Jo was younger than 13.
The first-grader was last seen sleeping with her 9-year-old sister. Bobbie Jo's body was found in a sleeping bag with Barry S. written on it, police said. Autopsy reports show the girl died of a broken neck.
Mr. Satta was arrested and charged hours after Bobbie Jo's body was found.
Mr. Satta entered the courtroom Tuesday in hand and foot shackles, but without a bulletproof vest, which he had worn when he was moved to jail last week.
Meanwhile, Bobbie Jo's mother, Mary C. Barry, 26, awaited arraignment Tuesday in Marion County Municipal Court on an obstruction of justice charge in an unrelated case.
She and two others were arrested after a police officer was hit by a car while responding to a call at a Delaware home, police said.
Ronald A. Johnson, 33, of Delaware, was charged with felonious assault on a peace officer. Janice M. Johnson, 50, of Marion, was charged with obstructing justice. Further details were not released.
Off-road vehicle crash kills girl, hurts boy
FLORENCE, Ohio A 7-year-old girl was killed and a 14-year-old boy was seriously injured when their four-wheel off-road vehicles crashed in a field.
The two children were driving toward each other and both swerved in the same direction, colliding head-on Monday, witnesses told Erie County Sheriff's deputies.
Lauren Kirk, of Walbridge, died at Lorain Community Hospital. Edward Guggenbiller Jr. of Lorain was in serious condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
Neither child was wearing a helmet.
Florence is about 50 miles west of Cleveland.
Water main breaks in Mount Adams
A broken water main created a 20-foot-long hole in Oregon Street in Mount Adams on Monday morning, partly swallowing a parked car.
No one was in the vehicle when the underground water main, just east of the intersection of Oregon and Baum streets, burst at around 8:30 a.m.
Cincinnati Water Works crews worked to restore water service to about 30 residents along the two streets in the southwestern portion of Mount Adams.By Tuesday afternoon, all but six residences had service restored.
Oregon and Baum streets will be closed near the intersection until the road surface can be reconstructed, most likely Thursday, officials said.
Damage estimates were not available.
Charges upheld in man's death
David Peet begged for his life before he was shot to death, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Police and prosecutors described the last moments of Mr. Peet's life during a hearing Tuesday in Hamilton County juvenile court.
After hearing testimony, Juvenile Court Judge Sylvia Hendon ruled that there is enough evidence to support criminal charges against a 17-year-old boy, one of two youths accused of killing Mr. Peet.
The next step for the accused teen, who is not being named because he is a juvenile, is another hearing Sept. 12.
At that hearing, the judge will decide whether the teen should face murder charges and a possible life sentence in an adult court.
Police say Mr. Peet, a 19-year-old college student, was killed Aug. 13 after giving a ride to two young men. The other accused youth, 19-year-old Michael Price, will face a possible death sentence if he is convicted.
Today's Reds game will disrupt parking
Downtown commuters who normally park in the Cinergy Field parking garage, the East Garage and riverfront lots B, C and F will need to find alternative parking today.
That's because of a Reds 12:30 p.m. game against the New York Mets.
There are several outlying lots available:
A&D Park Haus: Just off Sycamore Street in Over-the-Rhine.
Newport: Parking is available at a surface lot at Fourth and Columbia streets. Southbank Shuttle will provide access to downtown.
Kenton County Garage: Located across the Roebling Suspension Bridge. Access to downtown is provided by a shuttle bus operated by the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK), or Southbank Shuttle.
Union Terminal: A Central Parking shuttle service is available for $1. The shuttle operates from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. between Union Terminal and Fountain Square.
Company owner accused of fraud
The owner of a Cincinnati company was charged Tuesday with intentionally destroying $42,000 in light fixtures so he could collect insurance money.
Robert Carter, 44, is accused of ordering an employee to cut cables supporting a light display at his company, Decor Lighting on Montgomery Road.
When the cables were cut Nov. 28, prosecutors say, several ceiling planks broke loose and smashed a large display area.
They say Mr. Carter then claimed out-of-date or damaged fixtures as part of his loss so he would receive a high reimbursement from his insurance company.
Mr. Carter is charged with theft and insurance fraud. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
Ex-con leads police to woman's remains
EVANSVILLE, Ind. An ex-convict escorted authorities Tuesday to the dismembered remains of an Evansville woman, which had been scattered across three southern Indiana counties.
Police officers accompanied Joseph Weldon Brown through early morning darkness seeking the remains of Ginger R. Gasaway, 53, his ex-girlfriend, in Posey, Gibson and Warrick counties, Evansville police Capt. Bill Welcher said.
Dogs aided in the search, Capt. Welcher said.
An autopsy was being performed Tuesday to determine the cause of death and how the body was dismembered, Vanderburgh County Coroner Donald Erk said.
Ms. Gasaway and Mr. Brown had lived together at one time, and Ms. Gasaway had filed a domestic battery charge against him Aug. 16, Capt. Welcher said. Investigators think Mr. Brown killed her last Wednesday, after she asked him to return her car, which he had been driving.
Mr. Brown, 45, was arrested Monday at a rest stop on Interstate 71 near Lebanon, Ohio. Police found him sleeping in Ms. Gasaway's red 1993 Ford Mustang convertible.
Mr. Brown was expected to be returned to the Vanderburgh County jail late Tuesday after an extradition hearing in Ohio.
