Board plans to keep pursuing dentist

Magistrate threw out suspension of Norwood resident

Enquirer Columbus Bureau

COLUMBUS — The leader of the Ohio State Dental Board said Thursday a courtroom defeat will not end a long legal fight with a Norwood dentist.

A magistrate in Hamilton County has dismissed a six-month license suspension the board ordered for Dr. Parneet Sohi, accused of shaking a 2-year-old boy four years ago.

Dr. Sohi had challenged the suspension, and the magistrate threw out the case because the agency failed to file the appropriate court documents.

Dr. Sohi said the decision finally clears his record of wrongdoing. His argument that he was falsely accused is supported by the boy's father, who has tried to testify on the dentist's behalf.

Dental Board Director Lili Kaczmarek Reitz said the agency still hopes to impose the suspension. She said her staff plans to ask the magistrate what new steps the agency now has to take.

That irritated Dr. Sohi's attorney, Douglas Graff.

“What about "dismissed' do they not understand?” Mr. Graff said. “If they take another action against Dr. Sohi, we'll file a new appeal.”

The case figures prominently in a controversy that has dogged the Dental Board for more than a year. Complaints by Dr. Sohi and a group of Ohio dentists of lax investigative rules, racism, selective enforcement and political infighting led lawmakers to demand resignations from six of the board's seven members in June.

The agency plans to change rules governing its investigations and enforcement hearings.
