Sheriff's donation fund to be audited

The Associated Press

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. — A state audit will examine special fund-raising accounts established by Boyd County Sheriff Philip Sturgill to allegedly buy equipment for his department, auditor Ed Hatchett said.

Mr. Hatchett said he agreed to a request by the Boyd County Fiscal Court to undertake the audit.

The fiscal court had questioned whether it was legal for Sheriff Sturgill to solicit contributions. A 1982 attorney general's opinion said they could not.

Sheriff Sturgill opened two private accounts with Kentucky Farmers Bank for private donations for equipment like bullet-proof vests.
