HEALTHY EATING
For every excuse, there's a solution
We all know the reasons we should exercise. The benefits for our overall health and weight maintenance are undeniable. Why, then, do so many of us find it so difficult to get started?
Exercise takes time and exertion, two things that prompt many excuses. Below are some of the most common excuses and no-nonsense solutions:
1. Problem: I don't have time to exercise.
Time is the No. 1 reason given for not being more active. Many people think that if they can't exercise 30 minutes at a time, they shouldn't start. To the contrary, research shows that short periods of activity done throughout the day add up to significant health benefits.
Solution: Begin with a two-minute walk and expand it to 10 minutes. Once you have made time in your schedule for a new activity, you can learn to expand that activity relatively easily.
2. Problem: Exercise is boring.
Most experts agree that the best exercise is the one you will do. Most people who stick with a fitness program do so because they have found ways to make it fun.
Solution: One of the best ways to make exercise fun is to vary your activities. Some ideas include: walking at different parks during the week, taping favorite sitcoms to watch while working out at home, or working out with a friend or family member.
3. Problem: Exercise hurts.
The adage no pain, no gain has given way to the more sensible and realistic motto pain-strain.
Solution: Physical activity should not be painful. It is important to find the right exercise for you, especially if you suffered an injury, in which case, you may need to avoid weight-bearing activities (walking, jogging) and choose swimming, cycling or rowing instead. When you become more active, remember to take it easy and begin slowly and allow warm-up and cool-down periods.
Experts agree: Exercise is one of the most powerful drugs available. So powerful, that it offers both immediate and long-term benefits. Do yourself a favor and take time to find solutions to enable you to start moving.
